RECIPE: Spicy Chocolate-Covered Oranges

RECIPE: Spicy Chocolate-Covered Oranges

For me, one of the joys of getting older is that I now love spicy foods.  Up until a few years ago, I wanted nothing to do with any form of spice.  But now I say, bring it on!  Just a touch of it though, please.

These Spicy Chocolate-Covered Oranges are exactly the amount of spicy heat I can handle.  Hot enough to feel the heat and taste the spice, but not so much that you can’t taste the heavenly chocolate and orange flavors.

These are truly delicious and very addicting.  I had no idea oranges, chocolate and cayenne pepper went so well.  I’m glad I experimented with these flavors. 🙂

RECIPE: Spicy Chocolate-Covered Oranges

What I love about delicious chocolaty treats like these chocolate-covered oranges is that they’re super quick, easy and, in moderation, healthy.  Oranges are packed with Vitamins A & C, calcium, fiber and even a touch of protein and iron, believe it or not.  While the semi-sweet chocolate chips I used do have sugar in them, they also have the same nutrients as the oranges, minus the Vitamin C.  Cayenne pepper even has touches of the same nutrients as oranges.  Awesome!  My excuse, however, for using or suggesting a touch of spice now and then is that is kills any “bugs” that may be in your system.  It keeps you healthy!  Well, that’s my theory, anyway.

Oh, and one more thing.  You could even plan ahead and make these for snacks at work or a road trip.  Just put them in a sturdy container and they should keep really well since, unlike many other dipped fruits, oranges don’t have any liquid on their surface to make the chocolate all gooey.  Gooey chocolate is for brownies, not oranges!

It’s a win-win – and yummy – treat all around!

So, do you like spicy foods?

RECIPE: Spicy Chocolate-Covered Oranges

Prep Time: 15

Total Time: 15

Oranges, peeled and sectioned
Chocolate chips
Cayenne pepper

Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper or use a Silpat mat.

Peel and section orange(s). Remove excess pith (white stuff).

Melt chocolate in 30-second increments, stirring after each melting. When chocolate is almost, but not completely melted, continue stirring until completely melted. Do not overheat chocolate or it will burn.

Dip one orange section at a time, dipping the top half into the melted chocolate. Place on the lined cookie sheet and immediately sprinkle cayenne pepper onto the wet chocolate before it sets. Continue dipping until all orange sections have been covered.

If chocolate hasn't set after dipping is completed, place in the refrigerator for 5 minutes or until set.

As always, enjoy! 🙂

I can’t wait to try these. What a great idea! I live in Florida so I have access to delicious oranges year round. I am also a fan of spicy foods and chocolate so these are right up my alley.

Lucky you to have access to oranges like that. The ones out here in Seattle are horrible except in the winter. Blah!

I love these photos! I’m definitely going to try adding a little cayenne next time I make chocolate covered oranges. Like you, it took me a while to like spicy foods. 🙂

This seems like it’d be both healthy (the oranges) and fun. 🙂
