How To Stop Your Chocolate From Breeding Like Rabbits

Let me preface this by saying I have one of the ugliest kitchens on the planet. OK, I’m done. On with my dilemma.
Help me! My chocolate is breeding like rabbits!!! I’m serious. Look at it!
Multiple bags of chocolate candy melts, white and dark chocolate chips bags, umpteen chocolate bars of various brands, half a dozen candy molds, a Wilton Chocolate Melting Pot, a giant chocolate salmon, several packets of hot chocolate, three boxes of Whoppers, two canisters of Theo sipping cocoa…
and a paaaaartridge in a peaaaaar treeeee!!!
And that’s just what you can actually see. As you can probably tell, some of it was buried. To say my chocolate “collection” has gotten out of hand is an understatement. For the last two years, I’ve been tossing and stuffing chocolate this and chocolate that into my little chocolate cupboard (see last pix).
Toss. Stuff. Toss. Toss. Stuff.
Then things were hard to find, “Argh, where did my chocolate mold go?”
It got so bad I had to shove it in the cupboard with one hand and quickly close the door with the other, in the hopes it would stay closed. After all, it would be a bad thing if our dog, Ginger, got into my chocolate again. When I couldn’t close the door anymore, I knew I had to do something.
It was time to purge. BIG time purge!

I’m sad to say I had to throw out all this awesome chocolate. It was more than a few months past its pull date. Yes, that means I threw away the “Have a very Merry Christmas! Elvis Presley” hot chocolate.
Will you forgive me?
Toss. Toss. Stuff. Stuff. Into the garbage it went. I don’t need to tell you how mad I was for letting my chocoholic-ism (is that even a word?) get so out of hand.

My new collection is much more organized now. Like-things are together again!

I tucked some of it here – popsicle sticks, straws, plastic spoons, chocolate chips, coconut oil, flour and sugars. All necessary for a chocoholic, chocolate blogger. Was that redundant?

And some of it there. Well, I only put my Nutella in this cupboard. I just wanted to show you I also reorganized my butt-ugly cupboards too. My Bob’s Red Mill goodies are on the upper-left shelf. I love Bob’s Red Mill!

And finally, my chocolate cupboard! I struggled to get a good shot, given it’s almost as dark as a cave. I put my Wilton Chocolate Melting Pot back in here as well as my chocolate molds and almost all my various chocolates, minus the chocolate chips and Nutella I mentioned above.
It feels great to have my chocolates and chocolate tools organized once again. Not knowing what I had or didn’t have was the worst. After all this, I promised myself I wouldn’t buy any more chocolate until I used it all up. I’m trying really hard to keep my promise.
How about you, do you have, or know someone who has, a stash of chocolate or candy that’s gotten out of hand? What did you do about it?

I know. I’m ashamed of myself for letting my chocolate hoarding get so out of control. I’ll definitely keep you in mind if I grow another uncontrollable stash!
I put my chocolate in the freezer and the fridge so it won’t melt and it’ll keep longer. I don’t know if you’re supposed to do that or not, but I don’t see how melting in the summer heat is good for it either. I should say that it’s mostly the candies in the freezer (kisses, peppermint patties, etc) and chips are in the fridge. Your cabinets are much more organized than mine will ever be. I have stuff all over the place, but I know where things are so if I ever reorganize, I’ll never find anything.

Hi Janet! You’re not suppose to freeze chocolate, but I think the kind you’re doing it to is OK. I LOOOVE frozen peppermint patties too. Yum-O!!!
I HAD to reorganize because I didn’t know what I had! Ack!
That is an impressive range of chocolate you have there!

Thanks, Spencer! I love your website! Awesome chocolate and candy selections!
I did this not too long ago and about died at all that I had and didn’t know I had. It was the first step I had to admitting I am a bit of a candy hoarder

I have a tendency to start to stockpile candy and chocolate if left unchecked. So now I have a dedicated cupboard and store everything in clear containers.

We’re all here to support you and recognizing you have a problem is the first step. LOL It would be hard for me to throw out chocolate too. I’ve never had sipping chocolate, but I would love to try it. I believe that’s one of the originating chocolate forms?

Hi Billie! Yes, sipping chocolate is one of the original forms of sipping cocoa that the Mayans and others drank (without sugar at first! ack!). I LOVE Theo’s sipping chocolate. EXCELLENT! Thanks for the support!!!
Next time you’re purging, let me know and I’ll send you my address. You realize the expiration date is just a friendly suggestion, right?

Oh man isn’t that chocolate abuse? I would have made something lol or just ate it. Jeeze it is just an expiration date haha! This post had me laughing!

Mine is completely out of hand. umm, sorry to say. And my pantry is beyond ridiculous. I need an intervention.

Chocolates don’t breed like rabbits in our home. That’s because they get gobbled up by the chocolate piranhas lol!

not to be contrary, but I like the green and cream of your kitchen that I can see. But mind you, I”m not seeing the whole kitchen and tastes vary!

LOL My cabinets look the same way! You can send me some of that chocolate if you have too much!

I think I may have all of you beat. I actually sat down with my bags of Nestle Christmas colored chocolate chips with a cookie sheet and 3 zip lock bags. I dumped package at a time and separated the red, green and chocolate chips out of the bag into 3 separate bags for each color. I was taken in by the bargain basket at the grocery store selling said bags for 50 each. How could I pass it up? $3.00 investment – how I stopped at 6 bags I don’t know. The time spent was worth it as I now have red chips for Valentines day, Green for St. Patricks and of course good ole chocolate. If all else fails, i have them for next Christmas baking..
